The removal of the rib was for Adam an infinitely ennobling grace: the grace of being allowed to participate in the mystery of the Father’s self-giving to the Son, by which the Father empties himself of his own Godhead in order to bestow it on the Son who is eternally of the same nature as he is. It was a wound of love that God inflicted on Adam in order to initiate him into the mystery, the lavish self-prodigality, of divine love.113 The creation of woman “from the side” highlights God’s action:
